Our Mission
McGill Neurotech is an undergraduate student group dedicated to pushing the bounds of neurotechnology by building innovative projects every year. Our focus is on developing technology with an accessibility angle, while exploring the possibilities at the intersection of neuroscience and engineering. We are committed to inspiring advancements in the field and fostering a culture of innovation.
Our Story
Early Stages
In 2016, we started off as MENTAL: McGill Enthusiasts for NeuroTechology et Al. We solidified our place in the global NeuroTechX competition with our first project, Thinking Cap: a tool to detect gaps and peaks in focus and attention.
Becoming McGill Neurotech
By 2019, we rebranded as McGill NeuroTech. That year, we built MILO—a mind-controlled wheelchair—redirecting our group's mission towards accessibility-focused neurotechnology. MILO not only redefined our direction but also secured first place at the NeuroTechX competition, and earned us recognition from Google DeepMind.
Projects that follwed
We continued exploring how brain functions could be paired with different interfaces—using brain signals to control an arm with IRiSSE, leveraging eye movements for hands-free typing with EMGeyeboard, and even integrating neurotechnology into gaming with UNisOn, a mind-controlled card game.
Neurotech Today
Today, we are a team of 22 undergraduates dedicated to advancing neurotechnology. We continue to compete in year-long challenges, present our research at conferences, and aim to bring neurotech to the community by hosting info sessions and hackathons focused on BCI development.
